Playwrights Project thanks our donors for their support. We are pleased to announce these recent grants:
The Sidney E. Frank Foundation awarded Playwrights Project a grant of $45,000 in support of our Write On! standards-based playwriting program conducted in schools throughout San Diego County during the 2009-2010 school year.
A true leader in philanthropy for the arts, Mandell Weiss Charitable Trust has again provided $10,000 in underwriting for Plays by Young Writers, to be produced at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza in February 2010. Judges are combing through almost 250 scripts submitted to our statewide playwriting contest to select the winners for this year's festival.
The Parker Foundation continues its support of Playwrights Project through its recent $10,000 grant.
Support from state and local agencies has a large impact on our programming:
The San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture continues to provide the most critical support to the arts community by funding organizations with general operating support. We are pleased to announce our recent grant of $39,099 for the 2009-2010 program year.
A National Endowment for the Arts: Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth grant of $23,000 will support playwriting residencies for underserved populations in San Diego schools, including programs for students in juvenile court schools, pregnant minors, homeless teens and English language learners. Matching funds are required. Your support is welcome.
The California Arts Council, through its Artists in Schools program, awarded us a $9,600 matching grant, supporting playwriting residencies and tour performance at Keiller Leadership Academy in the coming year.
The California Council for Humanities is helping re-establish our Lifestages program for seniors, with a matching grant of $10,000 for Lifestages: Recollections and Reflections, which involves senior writing workshops and performances of seniors' plays at community sites and schools.
The San Diego Foundation, as part of its new initiative Art Works for San Diego, awarded Playwrights Project a $25,000 planning grant for Telling Stories: Giving Voice to Foster Youth. Telling Stories engages foster youth and care providers in a playwriting and media program to create live theatre and videotaped documentaries that voice the real life concerns of foster youth and encourage community involvement in improving the child welfare system.
