Playwrights Project will recognize the winners and finalists of the 2018 California Young Playwrights Contest in our annual Lights Up! reception on Saturday, September 29th at 5:30 PM. The reception will be held at Hattox Hall, directly above The Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre at The Old Globe Theatre Complex, where the Plays by Young Writers Festival will be held.  Join us in this intimate event to meet the playwrights of the upcoming season of Plays by Young Writers and gain insight into the narratives that inspired their winning plays. Thanks to all who submitted to our 2018
California Young Playwrights Contest!

Thank you to the California residents under the age of 19 who submitted scripts for the 2018 California Young Playwrights Contest, and many thanks to our letter writers and volunteer readers who have worked diligently to read and thoroughly review each script.

This year, we received 415 scripts from a total of 445 writers. Scripts were submitted from 63 schools from 31 various school districts throughout the state of California! Every writer who requested feedback on their script should soon receive a letter by mail or email.

A panel of theatre professionals served as final judges and selected the winning scripts that will be produced during Plays by Young Writers. Thank you to our final judges Peter Cirino, Thelma Virata de Castro, Danielle Mages Amato, Veronica Murphy, and Deborah Salzer for contributing your time and feedback to this talented group of young playwrights.

Winners will work with our creative team to revise and enhance their writing, which will culminate in a professional production at the Plays by Young Writers Festival in The Old Globe's Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre in January 2019. Keep up the great work, young writers!
Celebrating the Start of a New School Year

School is back in session! We are so excited to introduce playwriting to students across San Diego County. Our residencies empower students to embrace creativity and literacy while expressing themselves through playwriting.

"The product of all our hard work was definitely worth it... I had work that I could be proud of and I got the opportunity to perform our creation with my class. I learned that if I work hard, I can come up with amazing things.

We are proud of the students who have taken part in our residencies and can't wait to inspire new groups of young playwrights.
