If I Were Your Superhero, written by Laignee Barron at the age of 16, introduces us to Kylie, an independent teenager saddled with an alcoholic mother. Kylie reluctantly befriends a curious and talkative 10 year old boy with autism. Barron's witty and touching play won Playwrights Project's statewide playwriting contest and earned her a professional production in Plays by Young Writers at The Old Town Theatre in January 2009. (approx. 30 min) A post performance discussion between the actors and the audience will lead students to consider the themes, objectives and obstacles in the play, as well as conflicts in the students' own lives. The actors will improvise from the characters and situations suggested by the students, demonstrating how the students' ideas translate into live theatre. (approx. 15 min) Idaho Lament, written by Ben Kelly at the age of 13, incorporates clever dialogue and hilarious Broadway-inspired songs to tell the tale of a teenager's confrontation with high school bullies after his family relocates from Idaho to Texas. The play, written during one of our playwriting programs at a local school, won our statewide playwriting contest and was performed as a reading in our festival of Plays by Young Writers at The Old Globe in 2006. (approx. 10 min) This professional production offers students the opportunity to gain knowledge and appreciation of the arts through experiencing live theatre.
We
bring quality theatre to your school! Each performance is approximately 50-minutes and may be followed by a discussion of the play. The play is performed in your school’s theatre, auditorium or multi-purpose room. We request that the audience not exceed 200 to ensure all students can see and hear the performance. Writing
workshops are available for an additional fee to lead students to
