Playwrights Project has championed individual voices throughout its history, with a focus on uplifting underserved communities. It recognizes its history as a Predominantly White Institution (PWI) and will take the necessary steps to continue growing towards equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist practices that support and raise up BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and similarly marginalized individuals.

Our
History
Playwrights Project was founded in 1985 by Deborah Salzer who enlisted playwright Edward Albee to serve as Artistic Advisor for 20 years. Playwrights Project has earned its exceptional reputation in arts education through its dynamic and transformational playwriting programs for youth and its highly regarded Plays by Young Writers Festival.
Over 200 scripts have been produced in the Festival, which has launched the careers of many successful writers and playwrights including: Karen Hartman, Josefina López, Eliana Pipes, Annie Weisman, and Lauren Yee.
In 2007, Executive Director Cecelia Kouma expanded community programs, offering inclusive, accessible arts engagement to diverse communities across the region.
She founded the Out of the Yard Program in 2014 to serve currently and formerly incarcerated individuals through its.
Today, over 40 years after its founding, Playwrights Project continues to serve young Californians and the greater San Diego area by creating a community of inclusion, empathy, and imaginative storytelling.

Deborah Salzer, Founder
Deborah Salzer is a graduate of Oberlin College and the Bank Street College of Education.

Ms. Salzer founded Playwrights Project in 1985. In addition to creating curriculum and training teaching artists for Playwrights Project, Ms. Salzer has produced the premieres of over 100 plays, along with the award-winning television production of Simply Maria, or the American Dream by Josefina López.
Ms. Salzer is the author of Stage Write a curriculum unit which introduces playwriting to middle and high school students.
Collaboration
Playwrights Project prides itself on collaborating with many organizations in San Diego County. Current partners are acknowledged on the relevant program pages.

Victoria Plettner Saunders
PRESIDENT
Victoria is an arts research, planning and strategy consultant with more than 30 years of experience in the non-profit arts and culture sector.

With an MA in Arts Education/ Community Cultural Services from the University of Oregon, and a BA in Political Science from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.
Victoria is a recognized arts education advocate, writer, planner and researcher on the role of arts education in community settings. She has managed small and mid-sized arts organizations in San Diego including Playwrights Project, Malashock Dance and the San Diego Dance Institute.
From 1998 – 2005 she was on staff at the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture first as a Community Arts Coordinator and later as the agency’s first Financial Analyst. She chaired the Americans for the Arts’ Arts Education Council from 2010-2013 and started the first Emerging Leaders of Arts and Culture professional development program in San Diego in 2004.
Victoria managed her own private consulting practice and worked with WolfBrown working with clients such as the John S and James L Knight Foundation, The Flint Institute of Music, and the Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Los Angeles.
Victoria has been a consultant on local arts agency planning and community cultural planning projects in Nashville, TN San José, CA and Laguna Beach, CA. She founded the firm “The Arts at Work” that provides human-centered arts and culture consulting that places people at the core of planning and research projects.

Katie Keller
VICE PRESIDENT
Katie Keller is an artist, playwright, author and PhD student, focused on bringing creativity, expressive arts and creative problem-solving into community and businesses.

Her writing has been published in Global Voices For Change: Policing For The Common Good 2021(on Amazon), memoir anthologies: Shaking the Tree, Active Voices and on the blog Feisty Writers.
Several of her plays (written under the name KM McNeel) have been produced as readings including: The Oasis, Knitting at Nuremberg, Troll-ipheria and Heavenly Father.
Her vast employment history has focused on artistic and holistic approaches to community development, social justice, and environmental conservation and has included journalism, an artist residency at Oxford University Museum of Natural History, conference coordination, and producing for stage, television and radio.
Her career has taken her to the UK, Switzerland, and Cyprus. Katie’s professional affiliations include: the Dramatist Guild, International Expressive Arts Therapy Association, American Psychological Association, and Around the Block Playwrights.

Alisa Howry
TREASURER
As a Portfolio Manager at U.S. Bank, Alisa delivers investment services to help clients work toward their goals. Alisa uses her experience to establish an integrated investment approach.

She offers asset allocation strategies and recommendations based on short- and long-term financial objectives, financial status and risk profiles.
Alisa began her career in the banking and financial services industry in 2007. Prior to joining U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management, Alisa worked as an Investment Manager at Wells Fargo Wealth and Investment Management.
Her professional background includes extensive experience in investment research, portfolio analysis, setting investment objectives and risk management.
Alisa volunteers with various organizations and events in her community including the American Heart Association, Mira Mesa Little League and La Jolla Country Day School.

Roy Sekigahama
SECRETARY
Roy Sekigahama’s professional career began as a systems analyst for a bank in Los Angeles, and transitioned into quantitative research for an investment bank in Tokyo.

Roy holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from Yale University.
Roy was a founding member of Playwrights Project’s Around the Block writing circle in 2016. He attended all the performances of the Plays by Young Writers Festival since 2016 and was a Script Reader from 2017 to 2023.
His short plays have won awards from Scripteasers, the Jewish Culture’s 5-Minute Play Festival, and The PGE Faces of America Monologue Festival.
He has had readings of two full-length plays at New Village Arts in Carlsbad, with a full production of Desert Rock Garden (2022).
Roy is a volunteer usher for many theaters in San Diego. He is an usher Team Captain at the San Diego Symphony, and an usher Co-Captain for The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, and San Diego Rep. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild.

Ahmed Kenyatta Dents
Ahmed Dents is a 20-year veteran of the San Diego performing arts and media scenes.

His experience includes 14-years at the San Diego Repertory Theatre, where he worked as Director of Venue Experience, Patron Services Manager, Systems Administrator, IT Manager, Development Associate, and Application Support Specialist.
He has recently served as Patrons Manager at Mainly Mozart, Associate Artistic Director at New Village Arts Theatre, Director of Marketing and Communications at ALJP Consulting (a national consulting firm focused on inclusion and equity in the arts and culture sector), and Managing Director of The Carlsbad Music Festival.
Ahmed has also been an in-studio producer, radio host, live event host, and voiceover artist.
He has most recently been seen in the roles of “Mister” in Common Ground Theatre’s This Is A Low (2021), “Canada” in the Coronado Playhouse production of Harlem Duet (2021), and “Mr. Scruples” in the Genesis Opera production of The Impresario.
He is also a Board Member at Common Ground Theatre. Ahmed shared his lived experience as an Artistic Advisor for Playwrights Project programs with justice involved adults.

Allison Gardenswartz
Allison Gardenswartz has worked in the education space for over 20 years.

She currently serves as a private college counselor, private consultant, and parent educator throughout San Diego County.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in public affairs from the George Washington University’s School of Public and International Affairs, and her teaching credential through GW’s School of Education.
While living in Atlanta, Georgia, Allison completed master’s coursework specializing in adolescent education and the instruction of fluency in middle-schoolers.
She completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education Principals’ Institute in 2011 and continues to utilize that learning in her daily consulting life.
Allison is a certified college counselor and sees private clients full time now in this arena, with a particular niche in scholarship acquisition.

Jacob Gardenswartz
Jacob, a San Diego native, is an award-winning reporter, writer, and multimedia journalist.

His journalism experience runs the gambit from covering presidential elections and the White House to reporting on health policy, the COVID-19 pandemic response, and the U.S. Congress.
Jacob graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Communication and Public Service, and simultaneously received his Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) at Penn’s Fels Institute of Government.
He began his professional journalistic career at NBC News, where he worked on the Decision Desk team projecting elections and analyzing exit polls with Steve Kornacki.
Jacob later served as associate producer to MSNBC Chief Legal Correspondent Ari Melber, scripting cable news segments about issues of law and criminal justice and spearheading the network’s coverage of the Mueller investigation and Trump impeachment trials.
In 2020, Jacob joined NBC’s White House Unit as an associate producer, traveling the country covering President Trump’s reelection campaign and later the Biden White House.
Beyond his work in TV, Jacob’s reporting has been featured in The New Republic, Vox, Town & Country, the Times of San Diego, and The American Independent.
He currently serves as Washington Correspondent for The Wyoming Truth, a nonprofit publication based in the Equality State for which he received the 2023 Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism. He also serves as Democracy Correspondent for The Objective.

Susan Gembrowski
Susan is a member of the Dramatists Guild and Playwrights Project’s Around the Block Playwrights.

Around the Block Playwrights, showcases its work in staged readings at San Diego venues, including Moxie Theatre and the former Ion Theater.
She is a board member of San Diego Writers Ink and her short stories have been published in A Year in Ink.
She is president of La Jolla Playhouse Partners and a trustee at La Jolla Playhouse. Her playwriting awards include the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center “5-Minute Play Festival” and the Scripteasers “Script Tease of Short Plays” competition.
In her former life, Susan was an assistant metro editor and award-winning reporter at the San Diego Union-Tribune, and a counselor and journalism and English teacher with the San Diego Unified School District.

William B. Guthrie
At Northern Trust, Bill works with affluent individuals and families to develop and implement integrated wealth management solutions to help them grow, preserve and pass on their wealth.

He has a Doctor of Law from California Western School of Law and a BA from Texas State University.
Before joining Northern Trust in 2005, Bill practiced law in San Diego in the fields of Estate and Tax Planning, Estate Settlement, and Trust Administration.
In addition to serving on Playwrights Project’s board of directors, he is a member of the San Diego YMCA Gift Planning Advisor’s Council and the Scripps Health Professional Advisors Council.
Bill is a Past President of the La Jolla Probate Group.

Ann Radosevich
Ann Radosevich, is a native San Diegan, and has a BA in Business Administration with and emphasis in Human Resources.

Her career has included human resources work for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) as Union Contract Administration for the Operations Division. Coordination of out-of-state Recruiting for potential Flight Attendants and assisted in transitioning the HR systems when the company’s merged with USAir.
She was an Independent Contractor for The San Diego Union Tribune and was subsequently offered as the HR Manager overseeing all recruitment, benefits, and onboarding, as well as Employee Relations for the non-union operation. She became the Director of HR and worked through two subsequent company purchases.
After 23 years, she opted for early retirement and worked as an independent contractor conducting HR audits for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. In 2019, the Diocese hired Ann to coordinate the implementation and training for a new Payroll and HRIS system with 148 separately-incorporated locations.
She subsequently served as HR Director, serving all Parishes and Schools with Employee Relations issues, negotiated and implemented Benefits, served on the Pension board, as well as coordinating all COVID-related activity/reporting on behalf of the Diocese.
She has now once again retired and has resumed doing part time “Review” work as an Independent Contractor for the Diocese.

Ally Templin
Ally Templin is a former journalist and a lawyer who teaches contract law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law downtown and is the author of multiple law textbooks.

Cecelia Kouma has a BFA in Theatre Arts, from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

She was hired as Playwrights Project’s Managing Director in 2000 and began serving as Executive Director, following the Founder’s transition from leadership in 2007. Her work as an arts administrator includes 11 years as Associate Director of the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.
Ms. Kouma founded the organization’s community programs, including Out of the Yard for justice-involved adults and Telling Stories: Giving Voice to Foster Youth. She has taught theatre and playwriting to youth, adults and educators in San Diego and Los Angeles Counties and has presented at conferences on the topics of arts education and nonprofit management.
